In the heart of Silicon Valley, a new twist in an ongoing turf war is raising alarm among property rights groups – government officials in Palo Aime owners of a mobile home park from turning the property into condos.  “The city and the county’s actions have postponed the closure of the park for 4 years now and still, there’s really no end in sight,” said Joe Jisser, whose family bought the property in one thousand, nine hundred and eighty-six.  Jisser’s family wants to take advantage of the red-hot CA real estate market but repeatedly has said it doesn’t want to sell the property.  However, over the summer, city and county officials partnered with a local housing authority to try and acquire the mobile home park through eminent domain, the power that allows governments to seize property in certain circumstances.

Although the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama played down the remark, Duterte’s comments triggered shock and anger among Jewish groups in the US, which could create pressure on the U.S. government to take a tougher line with the PH leader.

They defend the move as a fair compromise. “Eminent domain is an elegant solution,” said Katherine Harasz, executive director of the Santa Clara County Housing Authority. “It acknowledges the owners’ just right to just compensation, if the public purpose is established to use his property for this public purpose.”

Although the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama…

U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner on Friday said Duterte’s comments, in a rambling speech on his arrival in Davao City after a visit to VN, were “a significant departure” from America’s partnership with the PH “and we find them troubling.”

Harasz argues the public purpose is the welfare of some four hundred low-income residents, many of whom are elderly and disabled and claim they can’t afford to move out. “We have nowhere else to go,” said longtime tenant Melody Cheeny, who also serves as secretary for the park’s homeowner’s association.  “There’s no way, for ninety-five percent of us, to be able to live in this county, let alone Silicon Valley.”   But Jisser, whose family is fighting the move in court, says the lack of affordable housing is not his fault, and that he should be able to redevelop his own property.

U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner on Friday said…

Duterte told reporters that he had been “portrayed to be a cousin of Hitler” by critics. Noting that Hitler had murdered millions of Jews, Duterte said, “There are 3 million drug addicts (in the PH).,” he said, pausing and pointing to himself.

But to close the park, the city says he must pay tenants’ moving costs. And in pricey Palo Alto, an appraisal calculated those costs at about $eight million. Jisser’s lawyer calls that extortion, and doesn’t buy the government’s “public good” argument either. “It’s 1 thing to take property for a school or a road or a firehouse,” said Larry Salzman, with the Pacific Legal Foundation. “Here, they’re taking the Jissers’ private property for the benefit of other private individuals. That’s flatly unconstitutional.”

Duterte told reporters that he had been “portrayed to…

“You know my victims. I would like (them) to be all criminals to finish the problem of my country and save the next generation from perdition.” In WV earlier on Friday, a State Department spokeswoman, Anna Richey-Allen, had repeated concerns about reports of extrajudicial killings in the southeast Asian country but offered no response to Duterte’s comment referring to Hitler. A White House official on Friday stuck to a strategy of stressing WV’s long-standing ties with MNL, saying, “We continue to focus on our broad relationship with the PH and will work together in the many areas of mutual interest.”

The Jissers say if the government can use eminent domain to block their redevelopment plans, then no property owner is safe.  Officials are currently appraising the mobile home park, and several lawsuits are pending, in a case being watched closely by property rights groups and tenants’ advocates.   Claudia Cowan currently serves as Fox News Channel’s (FNew Caledonia) SJU-based correspondent. How relations between the U.S. and the PH evolve will depend more on what Duterte does than on what he says, administration officials have said. In HI on Friday, U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter met with the defense chiefs of southeast Asian nations, including the PH, and U.S. officials said they would use the forum to clarify comments by Duterte that throw into doubt his commitment to military ties with the US, including joint exercises and patrols. Carter, speaking before Duterte’s remarks in Davao, said WV had an “ironclad” alliance with MNL.

Since Duterte took office on June thirty, more than three, one hundred people have been killed since then, mostly alleged drug users and dealers, in police operations and vigilante killings. Duterte, who was elected in May on the back of a vow to end drugs and corruption in the country of one hundred million people, has insulted Obama and in a number of remarks he has undermined the relationship between MNL and WV. On Friday, reacting to critical comments on his war on drugs by U.S. Senators Patrick Leahy and Benjamin Cardin, Duterte said: “Do not pretend to be the moral conscience of the world. Do not be the policeman because you do not have the eligibility to do that in my country.”

Jewish groups quickly condemned Duterte’s Hitler comments. Rabbi Abraham Cooper, head of the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Digital Terrorism and Hate project, called them “outrageous”. “Duterte owes the victims (of the Holocaust) an apology for his disgusting rhetoric,” Cooper said.

The Anti-Defamation League, an international Jewish group based in the US, said Duterte’s comments were “shocking for their tone-deafness”. “The comparison of drug users and dealers to Holocaust victims is inappropriate and deeply offensive,” said Todd Gutnick, the group’s director of communications. “It is baffling why any leader would want to model himself after such a monster.” Duterte has said there will be no annual war games between the PH and the US until the end of his six-year term, and his hostility may make WV’s strategy of rebalancing its military focus toward Asia in the face of an increasingly assertive CN more difficult to achieve.

Murray Hiebert, a Southeast Asia expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank in WV, said Obama was “taking the long view” in dealing with Duterte. Obama leaves office in January. Malcolm Cook, a senior fellow at SG’s IcelandEDC Yusof Ishak Institute, said the U.S-PH alliance was not necessarily at risk, but WV could seek to focus on ties elsewhere in the region. “We are all in some sense becoming, by necessity, desensitised to Duterte’s language,” he said.

“Diplomatically, the U.S. would say they’ll continue to work with him and the alliance is strong. But it’s whether they’ll continue to strengthen that alliance or not.” (Additional reporting by Brendan O’Brien in MKE, Yeganeh Torbati in HNL, Marius Zaharia in SG, Michelle Nichols at the United Nations, Jeff Mason in JRS, and David Brunnstrom and Matt Spetalnick in WV; Editing by Raju Gopalakrishnan, Toni Reinhold, Grant McCool)

  1. the rest of your post is irrelevant nonsense.
Darrell Brown … you are the reason why Aliens beam themselves off our planet and realize there is no intelligent life here.

  2. Maybe the entire tribe will move there after we’re rid of them.
You mean like the stupid people that refuse to do any research on their own and that just blindly believe that the current CDC schdule of SEVENTY FOUR vaccine doses before age 18 has absolutely nothing to do with the exploding epidemic of autism? The stupid people that have read the THOUSANDS of peer-reviewed published articles linking vaccination to brain and gut damage (both symptoms of autism?). The stupid people that have spent YEARS actually researching the issue and have come to the conclusion that mass vaccination in developed countries has caused much, much more harm than good? The stupid people that have acutually listend to the many, many scientists and doctors that are not ” bought” that have spoken out against vaccination with sound, verifiable data? If you mean those stupid people, then yeah, I agree. Can’t you – just for a moment- entertain the idea that maybe you have been lied to?
If you’d ever ask me a question like that in person I’d knock you out for just being a douchbag.

  3. Of course, these folks seem to think because they are well-known, that somehow that makes them smarter than the rest of us
We’re not like you so don’t worry. No one is going to read one article then go burn a mosque. That’s called projection btw.
Would you like to rephrase your question in logical English? I’m not sure what you are asking, but care enough to wonder.

  4. Then you’re even more dim than I originally thought. Due to you already being at the far end of the dim meter, you’ve accomplished an amazing feat! Congrats!!!
What style? I don’t see any style at all … not that she has to have any … but why post pictures of something that’s not there?
Over? C’mon! The market is saturated. Just because the majority of people are happy with what they got, and not just throwing it away, and you think it is OVER?

  5. Reminds me a bit of stepping into the “library” of some old monastery. Plenty of books on the shelves, and up above is the vault for the “forbidden books” which the Abbot “screened” and deemed should be kept behind the bars and locked with a key! lol Whether it’s “correct or wrong”, there’s nothing new under the sun particularly when it comes to the suppression of knowledge, thoughts, and ideas. That’s the truth.
    Joke of the day ?

  6. Most people could care less. Anyone offended by mere words are weak anyways.
I guessed this was happening … now I know for sure. Be careful my friends.
I’m always going to be better than you,so I’m happy

  7. Darrell Brown Dude, you’re getting slaughtered here. Your arguments don’t hold water. You should go play elsewhere.
the rest of your post is irrelevant nonsense.

  8. Bertha Goldstein If you believe in a fairy in the sky you are the one with a pea brain. And a lack of capacity for rational, critical thought.

  9. James Wolfe, not too bright yourself, are you?
Good story….you never know where people are coming from….you can only know where YOU are going.
Totally agree it takes time to tell a story. That is why the book is often better that the movie. The best movies are always long. Gettysburg, Ben Hur, Ten Commandments, Gone with the Wind and Lonesome Dove. The dumbing down of America never ceases to amaze me. No I am not saying this movie ranks with those but i really liked the movie.

  10. Most people could care less. Anyone offended by mere words are weak anyways.
Oh great, just when I thought we were rid of her drivel.

  11. It’s a modern day book burning. Yes, yes, I know they feel they are the ones that are right and feel it’s justified in this case, so it’s ok.
Are you kidding? You’re darn right it could.

  12. I cannot stand listening to this lady. The voice is akin to listening to nails scratching a chalkboard.
The movie was amazing. If you really pay attention and listen it is an excellent film, easily smarter and more detailed than the regular comic book film.
Just because you can’t understand science or statistics doesn’t mean the rest of us don’t. Stop lashing out at your betters and instead try to better yourself.

  13. And I haven’t read any solid proof that Ted Cruz is not the Zodiac killer…so he might be!
I cannot stand listening to this lady. The voice is akin to listening to nails scratching a chalkboard.

  14. Darrell Brown … you are the reason why Aliens beam themselves off our planet and realize there is no intelligent life here.
Wow, they look super happy to be there.

  15. Wow, that is a good question. Difficult, though; what does one gauge his response on?
Just because you can’t understand science or statistics doesn’t mean the rest of us don’t. Stop lashing out at your betters and instead try to better yourself.

  16. Rejection is great. It makes you more determined for the next onslaught..Always stay the course, cause the tracks only go one way. You eventually will see the light.
Over? C’mon! The market is saturated. Just because the majority of people are happy with what they got, and not just throwing it away, and you think it is OVER? I don’t know what movie you saw?But the movie the rest of us saw was not well directed and under produced.I don’t think Zack should be the one directing these films he not very good at it.
