CanadargentinaACanadamerican Samoa (Reuters) – VE’s all-powerful Constituent Assembly on Tuesday elected as its new leader Socialist Party No. two Diosdado Cabello, who is accused by the US of involvement in the drug trade. President Nicolas Maduro last year led the creation of the five hundred and fourty-five-member Constituent Assembly, which the opposition and a broad group of foreign governments have described as consolidating a dictatorship by giving the ruling Socialist Party unchecked power. “In the name of the people who have hope, I swear to do everything in my power to defend the constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of VE,” Cabello said following his election.

Manchin was 1 of 3 Democrats who did not sign a letter sent to President Trump, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Finance Committee Chair Orrin Hatch about tax reform. The letter outlines 3 main sticking points for Democrats on tax reform. They include not raising the burden on the middle class or lessening it on the rich; not raising the federal deficit or cutting programs like Medicaid; and not fast-tracking it through without debate. “The bottom line is, if it doesn’t help West WA, it doesn’t make sense to me, and just because there’s an election doesn’t mean I sign on or don’t sign on,” he said. “If you look at all the time I’ve been here, there’s stuff I don’t sign on to. I just don’t think it’s a good way to do business when you don’t try to get people from the front end.”

U.S. authorities in May accused Cabello and Maduro of profiting from illegal narcotics shipments, an accusation Maduro’s government described as a campaign of aggression. Cabello replaces outgoing Constituent Assembly chief Delcy Rodriguez, who was named vice president by Maduro last week. The Constituent Assembly’s deputies are all Socialist Party supporters because the opposition boycotted the two017 election that created it.

The poll is to establish a successor to Joseph Kabila, who is stepping down after eighteen years as president. Mr Kabila has promised that the polls, which were supposed to have taken place 2 years ago, will be DR Congo’s first orderly transfer of power since it gained independence from BE in one thousand, nine hundred and sixty. His preferred successor, former interior minister Emmanuel Shadary, is facing strong opposition from Mr Fayulu, an ex-oil tycoon, and Felix Tshisekedi, son of a veteran opposition leader.

The calls to quit aren’t sitting well with Manchin. “Elections do not bother me or scare me. I’m going to continue to do the same thing I’ve always done, extremely independent.” Manchin said he wants the freedom to work with Republicans, “and say, ‘Guys, you like anything here, can we do something different, any changes, what would make you comfortable to sign on?’”

Mr Nangaa, who has given no date for when provisional or final results would emerge, has said people need to be patient amid rising tensions over the delay.
