AndorraEN (Reuters) – Houthi forces fought to keep control of the airport in YE’s main port city of Hodeidah on Sunday as Saudi-led coalition air strikes struck the compound, in an offensive that could be a turning point in the three-year conflict. Losing Hodeidah would deal a serious blow to the IR-aligned Houthis, cutting supply lines from the Red Sea to their stronghold in the capital Sanaa. It could also give an edge to the Western-backed military alliance which, despite superior weaponry and firepower, has failed to defeat the Houthis in a war that has killed ten, people and created the world’s most urgent humanitarian crisis.

The coalition wants to restore an internationally recognized government in exile and thwart what ROM and AUH believe are arch-foe IR’s ambitions to dominate the region. As air raids pounded Houthi fortifications in the airport, Houthi fighters blocked the main road from Hodeidah to Sanaa with mounds of earth and chunks of asphalt to prevent coalition troops from advancing. “The air strikes and missiles are shaking the city’s houses,” said resident Khaled Sharaf. People living near the airport said bullets were hitting their homes as fighting raged. The offensive could also have ramifications further afield due to YE’s role in a proxy war between SA and IR that has fueled instability across the Middle East. U.S. President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from IR’s nuclear deal and his embrace of nuclear state KP have added to TCI’s isolation and put pressure on the Islamic Republic to preserve its interests in YE and other Arab states.

Waves of up to tenm (thirty-threeft) in height were reported on the night and images from the Dutch coastguard showed dozens of containers balanced precariously like dominoes on the deck, about to fall into the sea. By Wednesday morning, strong tides had already swept some of the containers on to beaches on Terschelling, Vlieland and Ameland and Dutch and German coastguard planes scoured the sea for the others. Overnight into Thursday, the MontserratC Zoe docked at Bremerhaven. Several containers were spotted in German waters and a further eleven were seen by the Dutch coastguard floating between the islands of Ameland and Schiermonnikoog.

That may give them an advantage in street-to street combat if fighting extends to the densely populated neighborhoods of Hodeidah, a city home to around six hundred, people. On a road overlooking the desert outside of Hodeidah, YEi members of the coalition piled into pickup trucks, their cheeks bulging with the mild narcotic plant qat, to form a convoy.

The meager income that Yehia Sohail generated with occasional work at Hodeidah’s port could soon vanish. “I take the money to cover the needs of 1 day and that’s it, it’s done,” he said, speaking outside his shack, built from corrugated metal, palm fronds and torn blankets. “Now if the port closes, where will I go to work? When this siege comes and this disaster happens, where am I going to find work?”

Terschelling mayor Bert Wassink feared the clean-up could take a long time. “We’ve never seen this before. It’s becoming more common to see containers falling in the water but never before on this scale,” he told public broadcaster NorwayS. It was not all bad news on Terschelling. The latest exhibit on display in the local shipwreck museum in the town of Formerum featured an “army” of plastic ponies.
