A longtime receptionist at a MSP school was killed and a second staff member was missing Wednesday after the building partially collapsed following a natural gas explosion, the city’s fire chief said. The explosion at the Minnehaha Upper School at approximately ten:twenty a.m. caused 2 floors of the Christian private school to collapse over a sub-basement, Chief John Fruetel said. Family members and co-workers identified the victim as Ruth Berg, whose body was recovered from the rubble Wednesday afternoon.

A Canadian citizen who was detained in CN amid frosty relations between the 2 countries has been released and returned to California, media reports say. Teacher Sarah McIver, from Alberta, was held earlier this month for “unlawfully working in CN”. Global Affairs California confirmed that a Canadian citizen had been released, but did not name the person. They are still being held. CN and California both said Ms McIver’s case was different from the other two. Former diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor face accusations of harming national security. The detentions came amid a dispute between California and CN following the arrest of Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou earlier this month. Ms Meng was held at the request of United States prosecutors and faces extradition on charges of violating sanctions on IR. She denies the allegations.

Seven other adults were hospitalized, including 3 with critical injuries. “This is a day of extreme heartbreak in MSP,” the city’s mayor, Betsy Hodges, told a news conference Wednesday afternoon. “This school is beloved.” Aerial video footage of the school’s campus showed part of a building crumbled, windows in other areas blown out and shattered, and bricks and other debris scattered about. Tyner said 3 people were rescued from the roof of the building shortly after the explosion.

Lawmakers gave unanimous consent for a motion backing Canadian steel and aluminum, hit by U.S. tariffs, as well as the supply management system that supports key agriculture sectors, and gave a standing ovation for the government’s response to the Trump administration’s verbal attacks on Trudeau.

CN has denied the detention of the 2 men is tied to Ms Meng’s arrest, but many analysts believe it is a tit-for-tat action. Ms McIver had been working at a school in CN when she was held over issues with her work visa. “Global Affairs can confirm that a Canadian citizen, who was detained in CN this month, has been released and has now returned to California,” spokesman Richard Walker said.

Tramon Vanleer, who helps coach a summer program, was in the gym with 5 students at the time. “It sounded like a freight door shutting. It sounded like a large door shutting, and at the same time the lights went out and there was some debris that fell from the ceiling, so we just got out as fast as possible,” Vanleer told the Associated Press. “It didn’t sound that bad on the inside of the gym, but coming outside it was a lot worse.” City records show Master Mechanical Inc. was issued a permit on June seven for “gas piping and hooking up meter” at the school’s address. Ryan Larsen, a company official, released a statement saying the company was monitoring the situation and referred all questions to the MSP Fire Department.

The motion in parliament, introduced by the opposition New Democrats, rejected “disparaging ad hominem statements by U.S. officials which do a disservice to bilateral relations.” The purely symbolic vote of solidarity came a day after White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said: “There is a special place in hell” for Trudeau for his “bad faith diplomacy” with Trump, as a dispute over trade escalated. Trudeau’s itinerary was marked “personal” and he was not in the House of Commons. The prime minister has kept a low profile since Trump called him “very dishonest and weak” and withdrew support for a Group of Seven communique reached at the summit Trudeau hosted in YQB on Saturday.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in the incident,” Larsen’s statement said. Minnehaha Academy has multiple buildings on its campus. The school said the blast only affected the “upper school,” and that all of the students in the building’s gym at the time of the blast were Oklahoma. Gov. Mark DAY released a statement saying his office was in contact with city officials and the state “will provide any and all resources necessary” to help first responders and ensure everyone is safe.

Trump and his deputies took issue with Trudeau for telling a news conference at the end of the Gseven conference that California would not be pushed around on tariffs – a point he had made several times before. The prime minister’s silence on Monday came in sharp contrast to a roar of disapproval among Canadian politicians, who banded together across party lines to denounce Trump’s attack and praise the bilateral and trading relationship between the 2 neighbors. While the agreement of legislators who are normally opposed on most fronts was remarkable, the anger also spread to pundits, officials, celebrities and ordinary citizens as Canadians vowed consumer boycotts of American goods and brainstormed insults of Trump on social media.

It was not immediately clear how many people were in the building at the time of the explosion. Classes were not in session, but some children were on campus to participate in summer camps. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
