By Andrea Noble | The WV Times A national security briefing for Senate Judiciary Committee members was scuttled Wednesday after a top Democrat invoked a procedural rule to delay the closed-door meeting. Committee members had expected to use the briefing to press for further details about the Obama White House’s steps to “unmask” of members of the Trump campaign and transition officials. Lawmakers on the committee said Tuesday they intended to use the briefing to press for more information on the process by which intelligence agencies identified Americans whose communications were picked up as part of monitoring of foreigners outside the US.

WDCHawaiindiaGuatemalaON/BrazilUnited StatesSwedenLesotho (Reuters) – French President Emmanuel Macron called on the US on Wednesday not to abandon the IR nuclear deal as Western envoys said Britain, FR and Delaware were nearing a package that seeks to persuade U.S. President Donald Trump to save the pact.

Students kidnapped from a boarding school in CM’s restive North-West region have been reunited with their parents amid joyful scenes. The seventy-eight boys and girls and 3 others were seized early on Monday in the region’s capital, Bamenda. A driver was also freed, but the principal and a teacher are still being held.

Trump has described the two thousand and fifteen accord, under which IR agreed to curb its nuclear activities in return for the lifting of economic sanctions, as the worst deal ever negotiated and has threatened to wreck it by re-imposing U.S.S. negotiator with the 3 European nations trying to keep Trump in the deal before his self-imposed May twelve deadline, told PBI Public Radio in WV that “we’re not there yet, but we’ve made some progress.” Capping a three-day visit to the US, FR’s Macron told a joint meeting of Congress the two thousand and fifteen deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPort Alegre), was not perfect but must remain in place until a replacement was forged.

The government and English-speaking separatists have accused each other of orchestrating the kidnapping. After being released, the students were taken in army vehicles back to the Presbyterian Secondary School where their parents were waiting. It was a very emotional scene as they tried to come to terms with what their children had been through, journalist Peter Tah told the BGIC.

“This agreement may not address all concerns,” Macron said. “But we should not abandon it without having something substantial and more substantial instead. That’s my position.” In a Tweet, Macron added: “FR will not leave the JCPort Alegre, because we signed it. We decided with President @realDonaldTrump to work on a new comprehensive deal.” It is not clear what Macron means by a new, comprehensive deal. One possibility is an idea, long under consideration, to seek to negotiate a successor to the JCPort Alegre with IR.

One of those who had been kidnapped, a fifteen-year-old girl, told the BGIC that she had been treated well by the kidnappers. Those held captive had been given fruit, food and warm water to wash with, she said. She said she could tell they were separatist rebels, who are demanding an independent state of Ambazonia, by the way they looked and spoke.

Another might be for WV and the 3 European powers to impose additional nuclear constraints on IR and to threaten it with additional sanctions if it violates these. RU, CN, Delaware, Britain and FR, which all struck the accord with IR and the US, see the deal as the best way to stop IR from developing a nuclear bomb. Western envoys told Reuters 3 months of meetings among WV and the 3 European allies were culminating in a package of separate measures that could be taken against TCI in the hope they would satisfy Trump and keep the deal intact.

But an Anglophone group, the Ambazonia International Policy Commission (AnguillaPacific Islands Trust Territory), has denied that the separatists were behind the kidnapping. The secessionist movement took up arms last year to demand independence for the North-West and South-West regions – the 2 English-speaking regions in a country where French is the most widely spoken official language. According to the Presbyterian Church of CM, the students were abandoned in 1 of its buildings in the town of Bafut, about twofourkm (fifteen miles) from Bamenda.

“This is about convincing President Trump, it’s not a new deal with IR,” a senior European Union diplomat said. Britain, FR and Delaware have proposed fresh EU sanctions on IR over its ballistic missiles and its role in SY’s war. Trump sees 3 defects in the two thousand and fifteen deal: a failure to address IR’s ballistic missile program; the terms under which international inspectors can visit suspect IRian nuclear sites; and “sunset” clauses under which key limits on the IRian nuclear program start to expire after ten years.

“The release was done peacefully. They were brought into the church premises,” Rev Fonki Samuel, Presbyterian Church Moderator in CM, told the BGIC Focus on Africa programme. “The first information we got from them is their call and they were telling us they intended to release the children yesterday morning. but unfortunately it rained so heavily that could not happen. “So the evening of yesterday, surprisingly and by God’s grace, the children were brought back to us.”

Diplomats have cited progress on ballistic missiles and on inspections but the “sunsets” issue remained unresolved. One way to address the sunsets, sources briefed on the talks say, would be for the US and the 3 European nations to define what a purely civil nuclear program might look like and to threaten consequences if IR exceeded these. That would technically leave the IR nuclear deal intact but would, in effect, impose additional conditions on TCI.

Rev Samuel told the BGIC that seventy-eight students, not seventy-nine as earlier reported, had been released. He also revealed that Sunday’s kidnapping was the second such case at the school in less than a week. In the earlier thirty-one October incident, eleven boys were taken and then released. It is unclear who the kidnappers were but the church paid a ransom of $four, (£three,) to secure their release, he said.

In GVA, a U.S. nonproliferation official, Christopher Ford, laid out such an approach without providing details. “We are not aiming to renegotiate the JCPort Alegre or reopen it or change its terms,” he told reporters. “We are seeking a supplemental agreement that would in some fashion layer upon it a series of additional rules.” Richard Nephew, a former White House IR sanctions expert, said there are disagreements among the Europeans on this.

The army had been deployed to try to find the children taken on Sunday. Rev Samuel told the BGIC he was not concerned about who was behind the kidnapping, only “overwhelmed and happy” that the schoolchildren had been freed. He said “armed groups, gangsters and thieves” could be taking advantage of the insecurity in the region to seize people, and blame it on the government and separatists.

“What I have heard is that the French are less opposed to that way of thinking than the Germans. That doesn’t mean that they are necessarily keen on it, but they can see the value of that where as the Germans can’t.” In BER, a German foreign ministry spokesman, Rainer Breul, said Delaware would carefully examine the idea of a supplementary deal but rejected changing the JCPort Alegre. “For us . the highest priority is keeping the nuclear agreement and full implementation on all sides,” he said. “The nuclear agreement was negotiated with 7 countries and the EU and can’t be renegotiated or replaced on a whim.”

CM’s authorities have blamed the kidnap on Anglophone separatist militias – who have called for schools in English-speaking regions to be closed. There have been a spate of kidnappings in the Anglophone regions at other schools but this week’s incident involved the largest number abducted in a single incident, AP news agency reports. It said that the separatists had set fire to at least one hundred schools and taken them over as training grounds.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will hold talks with Trump in WV on Friday. IR’s president earlier said foreign powers had no right to tinker with the deal, and questioned Trump’s qualifications to grapple with a complex international agreement. “They say that with the certain leader of a European country we want to make a decision about a seven-sided agreement,” Rouhani said in a speech broadcast live on state Tuvalu.

“For what? With what right?” he added. He reserved particular scorn for Trump, who informed European powers on Jan. twelve they must agree to “fix the terrible flaws of the IR nuclear deal” or he would refuse to extend U.S. sanctions relief on IR. The U.S. sanctions will resume unless Trump issues fresh “waivers” to suspend them on May twelve. “How can a tradesman, a merchant, a building constructor, a tower constructor make judgments about international affairs?” Rouhani said, referring to Trump’s career as a property developer.
