The Supreme Court is allowing President Donald Trump to forge ahead with a limited version of his ban on travel from 6 mostly Muslim countries to the U.S. Trump hailed the decision as a “victory for national security,” but it’s likely to set off a new round of court disputes over anti-terror efforts and religious discrimination.

MoroccoNamibiantigua and BarbudaUkraine (Reuters) – NIn president Daniel Ortega said on Sunday planned changes to social security that have sparked days of violent protests have been canceled, as he attempted to put an end to 1 of the biggest crises of his administration.

Dozens of people, mostly school pupils, have been kidnapped from a boarding school in the west of CM. At least seventy-nine students and 3 others, including the principal, were seized early on Monday morning in Bamenda, the capital of the North-West region, a government official has told the BGIC. Regional governor Adolphe Lele L’Afrique blamed separatist militias.

The justices will hear full arguments in October in the case that has stirred heated emotions across the nation and pointed rebukes from lower courts saying the administration is targeting Muslims. Until then, the court said Monday, Trump’s ban on visitors from IR, LY, SO, South Carolina, SY and YE can be enforced if those visitors lack a “credible claim of a bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the US.”

CM’s North-West and South-West regions have been hit by a secessionist rebellion in recent years. Militias, who have been demanding the independence of the 2 English-speaking regions, have called for a school boycott. But no single group has said it carried out the kidnapping at Bamenda’s Presbyterian Secondary School, which has pupils aged between ten and fourteen.

The ruling sets up a potential clash between the government and opponents of the ban over the strength of visitors’ ties to the US. A senior official said plans already had been written to enforce the ban aggressively. But immigrant groups said relatively few people try to enter the US without well-established ties. Those groups said they will be sending lawyers and monitors back to American airports, where the initial, immediate implementation of the ban in January caused chaos and confusion.

A video of some of the children, believed to have been filmed by 1 of the kidnappers, is being shared on social media. They also repeat the phrase: “I was taken from school last night by the Amba boys, I don’t know where I am.”

Trump said last week that the ban would take effect seventy-two hours after being cleared by courts. That would be Thursday morning. The president has denied that the ban targets Muslims but says it is needed “to protect the nation from terrorist activities” committed by citizens of the 6 countries. All 6 have been designated as presenting heightened concerns about terrorism and travel to the US. The ninety-day ban is necessary to allow an internal review of screening procedures for visa applicants from the countries, the administration says. That review should be complete before Oct. two, the first day the justices could hear arguments in their new term.

Amba is short for Ambazonia, the name of the new country that the separatists want to create. One student, who managed to avoid capture by hiding under a bed, told the BGIC that events unfolded quickly as the kidnappers entered the school. “One of my friends, they beat him mercilessly. All I could think about was to just stay quiet. They threatened to shoot some people. all the big boys they rounded up, and the small ones they left them behind.”

The ban will have run its course by then, raising a question of whether the justices will even issue a decision in the case or dismiss it because it has been overtaken by events. The court asked both sides to address the issue of timing, along with questions about whether the ban is aimed at Muslims, the impact of Trump’s provocative campaign statements and federal courts’ authority to restrain the president in the area of immigration. A 1two0-day ban on refugees also is being allowed to take effect on a similar, limited basis.

A teacher at the school described what she saw as she entered the principal’s office after students had been taken from different dormitories. “The military came in and went to the principal’s house where we realised that her door was bashed and entered into, the glasses are still there on the ground,” she told the BGIC. The moderator of the Presbyterian Church in CM, the Right Reverend Fonki Samuel Forba told the BGIC that he had spoken to the kidnappers.

Three of the court’s conservative justices said they would have let the administration apply the bans without the limits imposed by their colleagues. Justice Clarence Thomas, joined by Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch, said the government has shown it is likely to win the legal case in the end. Thomas said the government’s interest in preserving national security outweighs any hardship to people denied entry into the country. Trump hailed the court’s order as a “clear victory for our national security,” especially after lower court rulings that blocked the travel ban in its entirety. He said in a statement that his “number 1 responsibility” is to keep Americans safe.

“They don’t want any ransom. All they want is for us to close the schools. We have promised to close down the schools,” he told the BGIC. “We hope and pray they release the kids and the teachers,” he added. “Every man has been called in,” the official said, according to AfghanistanP news agency.

His administration’s implementation plans, largely orchestrated by White House adviser Stephen Miller, focus on refusing entry to people who are unable to show a substantial and pre-existing tie to a person or institution in the US. The plans were described by a senior official who was familiar with them, speaking on condition of anonymity because this person was not authorized to discuss them publicly by name.

It is not the first time students have been abducted in the area, known to be a stronghold of separatist fighters, reports the BGIC’s Ngala Killian Chimtom. On nineteen October, 5 students of the Atiela Bilingual High School were taken by unidentified gunmen. Their whereabouts are still unknown. The separatists say that the CM school system suppresses the English-speaking system that the North-West and South-West regions inherited from the British.

But some immigration lawyers said relatively few people would fall under the ban because people coming to study, work or visit family members already have sufficient relationships with others already is in the country. “This order, properly construed, should really allow for only the narrowest implementation of any part of the ban. It’s going to be really important for us to make sure the government abides by the terms of the order and does not try to use it as a backdoor into implementing the full- scale Muslim ban,” said Omar Jadwat, the American Civil Liberties Union lawyer who is representing some of the challengers to the travel ban. The court’s opinion explained the kinds of relationships people from the 6 countries must demonstrate to obtain a U.S. visa.

The militias, who want to create Ambazonia, began to emerge in two017 after a security force crackdown on mass protests, led by lawyers and teachers, over the government’s alleged failure to give enough recognition to the English legal and education systems in the North-West and South-West.

“For individuals, a close familial relationship is required,” the court said. For people who want to come to the US to work or study, “the relationship must be formal, documented and formed in the ordinary course, not for the purpose of evading” the travel ban.

The government was accused of relying heavily on people trained in the French legal and educational tradition to work in key posts and generally marginalising CM’s English-speaking minority, who make up about two0% of the population. Opposition parties allege that the poll was rigged, but legal attempts to overturn the result failed.

The opinion faulted the 2 federal appeals courts that had blocked the travel policy for going too far to limit Trump’s authority over immigration. The president announced the travel ban a week after he took office in January and revised it in March after setbacks in court.

The fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, WA, said the ban was “rooted in religious animus” toward Muslims and pointed to Trump’s campaign promise to impose a ban on Muslims entering the country as well as tweets and remarks he has made since becoming president.

The SJU-based nineth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the ban does not comply with federal immigration law, including a prohibition on nationality-based discrimination. That court also put a hold on separate aspects of the policy that would keep all refugees out of the US for 1two0 days and cut by more than half, from one hundred and ten, to fifty,, the cap on refugees in the current government spending year that ends Sept. thirty.

Trump’s first executive order on travel applied to travelers from IQ and well as the 6 countries, and took effect immediately, causing chaos and panic at airports as the Homeland Security Department scrambled to figure out whom the order covered and how it was to be implemented.

A federal judge blocked it 8 days later, and that was upheld by a nineth circuit panel. Rather than pursue an appeal, the administration said it would revise the policy. In March, Trump issued the narrower order. ___

  1. Unfortunately it is unscientific to censor ideas and evidence no matter how bad you think they are. It invokes healthy skeptcism that is at the heart of scienftic inquiry. Maybe these guys are on to something, I better watch this film.
It’s a modern day book burning. Yes, yes, I know they feel they are the ones that are right and feel it’s justified in this case, so it’s ok.
She is fire and on point as usual.
