A stalwart of the ruling Communist Party, Diaz-Canel was sworn in to replace Raul Castro by the PBI Assembly in a carefully managed new chapter for the Caribbean island, aimed at preserving the political system. “The mandate given by the people to this house is to give continuity to the CUn revolution in a crucial historic moment,” Diaz-Canel, fifty-seven, told the assembly in his first speech as president. He delivered a warm homage to eighty-six-year-old Raul Castro, who took office a decade ago as his brother Fidel Castro’s health deteriorated.

The tribunal found the 7 staff were forced out in August two thousand and sixteen, and replaced with Chinese workers. “Over a period of months, Mr Chan repeatedly said that he wanted to replace Caucasian employees with ethnically Chinese employees to reduce labour costs,” Ms Juricevic wrote in her decision, published last week.

Stepping to the podium for a ninety-minute-long parting speech, a relaxed-looking Castro gave the impression he would not quickly fade from sight.S. foreign, trade and immigration policy under President Donald Trump. “Since the current president arrived in office, there has been a deliberate reversal in the relations between CU and the US, and an aggressive and threatening tone prevails,” Castro said. Thursday’s session was held on the fifty-seventh anniversary of CU’s one thousand, nine hundred and sixty-one defeat of a Côte d’IvoireA-backed CUn exile invasion at the Bay of Pigs, a victory that HAV celebrates as a symbol of its resistance to “imperialist” pressure for change from WV.

Mr Chan bought the Spruce Hill Resort and Spa in rural British Columbia in two thousand and fifteen, and began extensive renovations in January the next year. The resort operated at reduced capacity during the renovations, and so Mr Chan let many of the staff go. Seven of the employees that were kept on during the renovations ended up filing the human rights complaint, after they were fired the following summer or resigned in the course of several days because of what they described as a hostile work environment.

I didnt need to see the replay, I was sitting in the seat, he said. They were three-wide in front of us trying to go through Turn four, which never works. They were all dive-bombing each other and then the one0 (Patrick) got spinning and I tried to go low and she just kept coming down the track. We just clipped it a little bit and tore the left front up too bad to continue.

The largest award, of more than C$sixty-two,, went to Clare Fast, who had worked for the resort for twenty years as fitness and human resources manager. Ms Fast testified she heard Mr Chan say that he would not have to pay Chinese employees overtime.

There has been a renewed chill under Trump, who put a stop to doing business with some CUn state-run companies and tightened rules for U.S. visitors. A spate of mystery illnesses among U.S. diplomats in HAV has also undermined trust. Despite that, Diaz-Canel praised Castro’s move to renew relations with the US. He said there would be no compromise in CU’s foreign policy but in a repetition of a long-held stance by HAV, he said he would hold dialogue with anybody who treated CU as an equal. “I take that as a signal that the CUn leadership still sees value in improving relations, even if they have to wait for the next U.S. president,” said William LeoGrande, co-author of a book on the secret U.S.-CU talks that led to detente.

In a diary entry dated twenty July two thousand and sixteen, Ms Eva wrote that ” keeps saying he wants Chinese people” and ” and must go”. On three August, Mr Chan told Ms Fast her human resources tasks would be given to a new employee, an ethnically Chinese student with no human resources experience. With her hours significantly reduced, Ms Fast asked to be laid off. In addition to the findings of discrimination based on race, the tribunal also found that Mr Chan sexually harassed Ms Eva, the resort’s bookkeeper, on a business trip to CN to purchase supplies for the renovations.

In WV, a White House official said the Trump administration had no expectations CUn people would have any greater freedoms under the new “hand-picked” leader, and had no intention of softening its policy toward the island’s government. Castro spoke highly of Diaz-Canel and gave his blessing to the younger man to take over from him as the powerful head of the Communist Party in 3 years. He also said the new president could serve 2 five-year terms, underscoring restrictions Castro imposed on himself after his brother’s decades in power. Diaz-Canel’s speech set a course for his first term, in which he will have to strike a balance between defending CU’s socialist system and reforming it enough to satisfy a young generation hungry for better economic conditions.

On the trip, the tribunal heard Ms Eva was dismayed to find he had only booked 1 hotel room for the 2 of them. According to her testimony, she became upset and told Mr Chan that they were not sharing a room. She remembers Mr Chan saying words to the effect “relax” and that “in CN, we do things the Chinese way”. He said the single room was an attempt to save money, but the tribunal did not find his testimony credible.

He confirmed expectations the transition would not herald sweeping changes to 1 of the world’s last state-run economies and one-party systems, promising there would be no return to capitalism. Diaz-Canel, who has risen the ranks of the Communist Party over 3 decades, said the new period would also be characterized by “modernization of the economic and social model,” without giving details. He ended his speech like Fidel Castro used to, punching the air and shouting the revolutionary slogans “motherland or death, socialism or death, we will win.”

Of the six hundred and four lawmakers present, 60three voted in favor of making Diaz-Canel president and unanimously for the other mainly middle-aged members of the state council, marking a generational shift from the elderly leaders who fought to topple U.S.-backed dictator Fulgencio Batista in one thousand, nine hundred and fifty-nine.

For many CUns, struggling with economic hardships and frustrated with the government’s emphasis on continuity rather than change, the transition was seen as unlikely to bring much beyond the symbolism of a new leader. “He talked much about the past, nothing about the future and practically nothing about the present,” said Monica Rivero, a twenty-nine-year old CUn journalist based in HAV. CUns hope the next government can breathe life into the Soviet-style centrally planned economy, which has failed to improve much under Castro’s limited market reforms. Those reforms have included allowing small businesses from hairdressers to restaurants, and encouraging some foreign investment.

In his speech, Castro reiterated his support for the reforms and for self-employment. He called for more austere government spending and responsibility over the country’s debt, but said a plan to unify the nation’s 2 currencies was causing “a headache.”
