Elites used to understand and respect ordinary Americans — before the Left destroyed education By Laura Ingraham | LifeZette In one thousand, nine hundred and eighty-seven, Allan Bloom wrote “The Closing of the American Mind,” a warning that “higher education has failed democracy and impoverished the souls of today’s students.” Bloom’s book landed like a bomb in the middle of the culture wars of the one thousand, nine hundred and eightys, as he contended that the top universities in the country were no longer giving their students the type of education they needed in order to protect and preserve the best aspects of American culture.

President Emmanuel Macron’s government faces ethical questions just over a week after it was formed after media disclosed that Richard Ferrand, a close ally of Macron, had rented business offices from his female partner and had also employed his son as a parliamentary assistant.

At the time, there were major fights over many aspects of the curriculum, all centered around 1 basic question: whether the brightest young Americans should be trained in a shared culture that would expose them to the best of this country and Western civilization.

The media spotlight on Ferrand, who is minister for urban planning and housing, is embarrassing for the new president, who has made it a priority to clean up a French political scene that is frequently beset by corruption scandals. The government plans to present a draft law in the next few weeks setting out a new ethics code for politicians. Ferrand was reported this week by the satirical weekly Le Canard Enchaine to have rented office space from his partner from two thousand and eleven for health insurance companies he headed.

“As tough as this was, it’s been a wonderful thing,” he added. “I think even for the country to watch and for the world to watch.” The devastating hurricane made landfall in the state a week ago. Some residents have been allowed to return to their homes but flood waters are still rising in other areas.

In general, of course, the Left won those wars. The college freshmen who were eighteen years old in one thousand, nine hundred and eighty-seven are now fourty-seven years old — meaning that relatively few people under the age of sixty received a solid grounding in the humanities of the type Professor Bloom thought were essential.

Le Canard Enchaine also said Ferrand employed his son as his parliamentary assistant for several months in two thousand and fourteen. Far-right leader Marine Le Pen and Socialist leader Jean-Christophe Cambadelis have called for Ferrand’s resignation while the conservative Republicans have urged prosecutors to investigate. Ferrand has said he has done nothing wrong, either legally or morally, and will not resign.

Harvey has been blamed for at least fourty-seven deaths, and about fourty-three, people are currently housed in shelters. President Trump and the first lady visited UT earlier in the week but stayed clear of the disaster zone, saying they did not want to divert resources from rescue work. However, the president was criticised for not meeting victims of the flooding and for focusing largely on the logistics of the government response.

Prime Minister Edouard Philippe rallied to the support of his embattled minister on Friday, saying he retained confidence in Ferrand and that voters would give their judgement on him when he stands in parliamentary elections in mid-June. “The voters in the constituency where Richard Ferrand stands will be able to say in 2 weeks whether they, like me, have confidence in Richard Ferrand, and they will act as justice of the peace,” Philippe told reporters. Ferrand has defended the office lease, saying the rent paid was below the market rate and that he had been open about his personal links with the office’s owner.

Visiting UT again on Saturday, Mr and Mrs Trump made a point of meeting flood survivors and volunteers in HOU. They took part in food distribution at a shelter, handing out packed lunches, and posed for photographs with victims when they requested it.

The prosecutor in the western city of BES, where the office is located, said on Friday there were no grounds for investigating Ferrand. It is not illegal for French lawmakers to employ relatives, but Ferrand has said he now regrets giving a job to his son. Ferrand, fifty-four, was rewarded with a ministerial post after leading Macron’s successful presidential campaign.

During a tour of a shelter, the president said: “I think people appreciate what’s been done. It’s been done very efficiently, very well, and that’s what we want. We’ve very happy with the way things are going. A lot of love. There’s a lot of love.”

The affair follows a bigger scandal that sunk the presidential bid of conservative former prime minister Francois Fillon. Fillon went from front-runner to also-ran after Le Canard Enchaine revealed he had paid public funds to his wife and 2 children for work that they might not have done.

Mr Trump has asked Congress for $seven.eightbn (£sixbn) as an initial payment to help with recovery efforts following the flooding in both UT and LA, which has also hit production at America’s main petrol and oil refining centre. Governor of UT Greg Abbott has said the state may need more than $one hundred and twenty-fivebn in aid.

Administration officials say there will be further requests for funds when the full impact of Hurricane Harvey becomes known. The debt ceiling is a cap on the total amount the United States government can borrow. Only Congress can raise that limit. Mr Mulvaney said almost half a million households had registered for support for rental assistance and for essential home repairs.

He called on Congress to act “expeditiously to ensure that the debt ceiling does not affect these critical response and recovery efforts”. A vote on the emergency request is expected next week. Harvey dumped an estimated twenty trillion gallons of rain on the HOU area. Governor Abbott has warned that the recovery programme will be a “multi-year project”.

“This is going to be a massive, massive clean-up process,” he told ABC News. Mr Abbott warned that in some parts of UT, rivers were still rising and flooding “poses an ongoing threat”. Media playback is unsupported on your device

Search-and-rescue teams have continued work in Beaumont, a city of about 1twenty, people near the LA border, where flooding has cut off the drinking water supply. The Environmental Protection Agency has warned that floodwater can contain bacteria and other contaminants from overflowing sewers. It said the biggest threat to public health was access to safe drinking water. Thousands of homes and businesses remain without power, and many schools are expected to remain closed on Monday.

Meanwhile, the HOU Astros, the city’s Major League Baseball team, returned home to take on the NY Mets on Saturday. Tributes were paid to those killed ahead of the game. The team abandoned their home stadium this week, playing 3 games in FL against the UT Rangers. “We hope that these games can serve as a welcome distraction for our city that is going through a very difficult time,” Astros president Reid Ryan said.

  1. Good start. Now euthanize them.
Darrell Brown ,even though I disagree with you, your demeanor towards rudeness is outstanding.
I, too, thought this was a typo, so I called this to the attention of the author.

  2. Then you’re even more dim than I originally thought. Due to you already being at the far end of the dim meter, you’ve accomplished an amazing feat! Congrats!!!
Reminds me a bit of stepping into the “library” of some old monastery. Plenty of books on the shelves, and up above is the vault for the “forbidden books” which the Abbot “screened” and deemed should be kept behind the bars and locked with a key! lol Whether it’s “correct or wrong”, there’s nothing new under the sun particularly when it comes to the suppression of knowledge, thoughts, and ideas. That’s the truth.
I am so proud of you my dear

  3. Who cares what they think?
Joe…agree!! Only sensible common sense thing to do at the moment.
Now run along to your safe space…

  4. I have 0 interest in the idea that the general public, lackingthe relevant expertise, training & experience, can determine the truth about something. Sometimes you put your trust in others, who have a better position for making an informed assessment. Do you ask a guy down the pub if this skin rash is cancer…….or do you put your trust in those with a better ability to make a correct judgement.

  5. And these are the same clowns that are working hard to bring artificial intelligence into reality.
Well said! Love and Acceptance is the key not fake science.
